இந்தியாவில் ஜாதி குறித்து “ஆம்ட் இல்ஸ் பிரபு”

தமிழ்நாட்டில் 1899 முதல் 1906 வரை ஆங்கில ஆதிக்க காலத்தில் ஆளுநராக இருந்த (Governor)  ‘லார்ட் ஆம்ட்இல்ஸ்”  (Lord Ampthills) என்பவர், தான் கண்ட தமிழ்நாட்டை ‘மார்னிங்போஸ்ட்  (Morning Post) என்ற இதழில் படம் பிடித்துக் காட்டியிருப்பது மிகுந்த பயனுடையது.

Nobody who has not lived In India can possibly understand the unique institution which is called ‘CASTE’ and only a few of the Europeans who have lived in India have any real comprehension of the system. For practical purposes it is sufficient to know.

i) That Caste and Hinduism are inseperable; infact, that the Caste idea is the soul as well as the body of Hinduism.

ii) That no Indian escape from that influence of the Caste idea..

iii) That the existence of the Caste spirit obsolutely precludes the establishment of the democratic ideal, which is that of equality of all man before the law.

இதன் தமிழாக்கம் வருமாறு:

இந்தியாவில் வாழ்ந்த அனுபவமில்லாத எவரும் அங்கு நிலவும். தனிப்பட்ட ‘ஜாதி’ என்னும் அமைப்பைப்பற்றிப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வாய்ப்பில்லை. இந்தியாவில் வாழ்ந்த அய்ரோப்பியர்களில் ஒரு சிலரால் இந்த ‘ஜாதி’ அமைப்பின் உட்பொருளை அறிந்து கொள்ளமுடியும். இருப்பினும் நடைமுறைக்காக இவற்றைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டாலே போதுமானது:

i) இந்நாட்டில் நிலவும் ஜாதிகளும், ஹிந்து மதமும் ஒன்றைவிட்டு ஒன்று பிரிக்க முடியாதது. இதில் உண்மையென்னவெனில் ஜாதியக் கருத்தின் உயிராகவும், உடலாகவும் இருப்பது ஹிந்து மதமே.

ii) இந்த ஜாதியக் கோட்பாட்டின் தாக்குதலிலிருந்து இந்தியர் ஒருவர் கூட தப்பிக்க முடியாது.

iii) இப்போதும் நடைமுறையில் உள்ள இந்த ஜாதிய அமைப்பு முறை - ‘சட்டத்தின் முன் அனைவரும் சமம்' என்ற மக்களாட்சித் தத்துவத்தை நடைமுறைப்படுத்துவதற்குப் பெருந் தடையாக உள்ளது.
